First Solar: Industry Leader in Responsible Solar and Transparent Reporting

First Solar’s 2024 Sustainability Report highlights the company’s industry leadership in ultra-low-carbon solar technology, high-value recycling, human rights, and transparent reporting. As the largest solar manufacturer in the Western Hemisphere, First Solar leads in environmental and social performance, with a strong commitment to responsible solar practices.

Celebrating 25 years in 2024, CEO Mark Widmar emphasized the company’s unwavering dedication to sustainability and climate action, noting that third-party validation has set new benchmarks for the industry. First Solar’s advanced manufacturing process produces solar panels with a carbon footprint up to four times lower than competitors. Their Series 6 Plus and Series 7 TR1 panels are the first to receive the EPEAT Climate+ designation for ultra-low carbon emissions.

Chief Product Officer Pat Buehler stressed the need for the solar industry to reduce its carbon footprint and invest in sustainable recycling, warning against reliance on coal-powered polysilicon production. First Solar operates high-value recycling facilities worldwide, with a 95% material recovery rate in 2023, and has recycled nearly 400,000 metric tons of photovoltaic (PV) modules since 2005.

Samantha Sloan, VP of Global Policy, Sustainability, and Marketing, highlighted First Solar’s leadership in social responsibility, including industry-leading human rights commitments. First Solar remains the only major solar manufacturer to have completed independent, third-party social audits across its global operations, receiving platinum ratings for its U.S., Vietnam, and Malaysia facilities.

In addition, First Solar has invested $4.1 billion in expanding its global manufacturing capacity, which is expected to reach over 25 GW by 2026. The company is also making significant investments in research and development, including the Jim Nolan Center for Solar Innovation in Ohio.
