Sidus Space to Supply FeatherEdge System for Infrared Fire Detection

Sidus Space, a leading provider of end-to-end precision space infrastructure solutions, has announced the sale of its FeatherEdge onboard computing system to Xiomas Technologies for a groundbreaking fire detection project. This collaboration, involving Sidus Space, Xiomas Technologies, NASA, and Harvard University, aims to revolutionize fire detection by utilizing a stratospheric balloon platform.

The FeatherEdge system will play a crucial role in processing high-resolution thermal images captured by Xiomas’ advanced infrared sensor. It will handle critical edge computing tasks, compressing raw data into smaller, actionable analytics for efficient transmission to ground stations. This capability ensures that essential information, such as the location, size, and intensity of detected heat signatures, can be quickly and effectively communicated, even in scenarios with limited bandwidth.

Scheduled for launch in October 2024, the stratospheric balloon platform represents a significant advancement in rapid-fire detection technologies. Carol Craig, CEO of Sidus Space, emphasized the importance of this project: “This sale underscores our commitment to leveraging space-based technologies for critical Earth applications. By integrating FeatherEdge with Xiomas’ infrared sensor, we’re not just selling a product; we’re providing a solution that could significantly enhance fire detection capabilities for firefighting agencies and disaster response teams globally. We’re excited about the potential this project has to open new doors within NASA and the broader fire prevention community.”

This project showcases the advanced capabilities of Sidus Space’s technology, positioning the company for future opportunities in both governmental and commercial sectors. By demonstrating the efficiency and effectiveness of Sidus’ low-latency data processing, this mission lays the groundwork for further integration of similar technologies in upcoming space missions.
