Renesas Electronics Corporation has unveiled a space-ready reference design for the AMD Versal™ AI Edge XQRVE2302 Adaptive SoC. In collaboration with AMD, the ISLVERSALDEMO3Z power management reference design features space-grade components for efficient power management, tailored for next-gen space avionics systems. This design supports various power rails with stringent voltage tolerances and high current requirements, and integrates both rad-hard and rad-tolerant plastic solutions.
The ISLVERSALDEMO3Z design is fully qualified for satellite payloads, featuring a PMBus interface for fault management, protection settings, and output voltage regulation. It also provides telemetry readouts for internal signal diagnostics. Unique to the industry, it is the only space-qualified power management system with a digital wrapper for optimized information transmission, and its core power solution is scalable to maximize investment in design and qualification.
As the demand for cost-effective space-grade systems grows with the increase in Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, the ISLVERSALDEMO3Z design addresses SWaP-C (Size, Weight, Power consumption, and Cost) needs. It uses space-grade plastic components to reduce size, weight, and cost, while wide-bandgap GaN FETs ensure high-efficiency power conversion.
The Versal AI Edge XQRVE2302 Adaptive SoC, with its advanced AI capabilities, converts raw sensor data into actionable information, ideal for anomaly and image detection. It offers a 75% reduction in board area and power savings compared to the previous-generation XQRVC1902 and incorporates enhanced AIE-ML technology for machine learning applications.
Josh Broline, Sr. Director of Marketing and Applications for Renesas’ HiRel Business Division, praised the collaboration with AMD, highlighting how the new reference design meets SWaP-C objectives, supports real-time system monitoring, and leverages AI power. Minal Sawant, senior director at AMD, emphasized the advanced features and performance of the Versal AI Edge XQRVE2302 SoC and Renesas’ power management capabilities.
The ISLVERSALDEMO3Z reference design includes radiation-tested power management devices such as PWM controllers, GaN FET half-bridge drivers, POL regulators, and power sequencers. Its compact design takes up just 67 square centimeters of board space. Additionally, it integrates with the ISL71148VMREFEV1Z voltage monitor reference design for precise monitoring of the SoC’s core power rails, accommodating both space plastic and rad-hard hermetic solutions.
These new reference designs will be showcased at the IEEE Nuclear & Space Radiation Effects Conference (NSREC), July 22-26, at Renesas’ booth (#427-429) in Ottawa, Canada.
Both the ISLVERSALDEMO3Z and ISL71148VMREFEV1Z reference designs are now available, including all necessary design files for quick integration, such as schematics, bill-of-materials, and PCB Gerber files. More information can be found at www.renesas.com/space.
