STMicroelectronics, a global leader in semiconductors serving a wide range of electronics applications, has partnered with Centrica Energy Trading A/S (“Centrica Energy”) to secure renewable energy for its operations in Italy. The ten-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), effective from January 2025, involves the sale of approximately 61 GWh of renewable energy annually, generated from a newly established solar farm in Italy.
In Italy, ST operates two major semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Agrate (near Milan) and Catania, along with several research and development centers, design facilities, and sales and marketing offices.
Geoff West, EVP and Chief Procurement Officer at STMicroelectronics, highlighted the significance of this agreement in the company’s journey towards carbon neutrality. He emphasized ST’s commitment to become carbon neutral in its operations (Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and partially scope 3) by 2027, including the procurement of 100% renewable energy by the same year. West noted that PPAs will play a crucial role in achieving this goal, with the agreement with Centrica slated to provide a substantial amount of renewable energy for ST’s Italian operations, encompassing R&D, design, sales, marketing, and large-volume chip manufacturing, starting in 2025.
Kristian Gjerløv-Juel, Vice President for Renewable Energy Trading & Optimization at Centrica, expressed satisfaction with the partnership, emphasizing Centrica Energy’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy capabilities. Gjerløv-Juel highlighted the significance of bringing renewable energy to one of Europe’s leading technology companies and underlined the collaboration as an example of Centrica’s efforts in developing compelling value propositions for partners and customers on a global scale.
