Flexsteel Industries Reports Fiscal Q1 2027 Results, with Sales and Orders Rising on Strategic Initiatives

Flexsteel Industries Reports Fiscal Q1 2027 Results, Advances Growth Strategy Amid Cost Pressures

Flexsteel Industries, one of the largest manufacturers, importers, and marketers of residential furniture products in the United States, has announced its financial results for the first quarter of fiscal 2027, ended September 30, 2026. The company reported continued revenue growth, stronger customer orders, and increased demand for its branded furniture products while navigating inflationary pressures, foreign currency impacts, and higher transportation expenses.

Net sales reached $114.0 million during the quarter, up 3.2% from $110.4 million in the same period last year. Sales of Flexsteel-branded products increased 5.1%, marking the company’s twelfth consecutive quarter of year-over-year sales growth. However, profitability declined as gross margin contracted and operating expenses increased amid a challenging economic environment.

Flexsteel reported GAAP operating income of $6.9 million, representing 6.0% of net sales, compared with $9.0 million and an 8.1% operating margin in the prior-year quarter. Net income totaled $5.4 million, or $1.24 per diluted share, compared with $7.3 million, or $1.31 per diluted share, a year earlier.

Despite these pressures, management highlighted continued progress in product innovation, strategic account growth, health and wellness offerings, and operational improvements. The company also maintained its capital-return activities through share repurchases and dividend payments.

First-Quarter Sales Growth Supported by Branded Furniture

Flexsteel generated $114.0 million in net sales during the first quarter of fiscal 2027, an increase of approximately $3.5 million, or 3.2%, compared with the prior-year period. According to management, the result was toward the upper end of the company’s guidance range.

Growth was primarily driven by Flexsteel-branded soft seating products, which contributed an additional $5.5 million in sales compared with the first quarter of the previous fiscal year. Sales of Flexsteel-branded products overall increased 5.1%, reflecting continued demand for the company’s core furniture offerings.

The improvement was partially offset by a $1.9 million decline in Homestyles ready-to-assemble products. Flexsteel is exiting the Homestyles category, and sales in that business decreased 57% from the previous year’s first quarter. Sales of Flexsteel-branded casegoods products remained relatively flat.

The shift away from Homestyles forms part of the company’s broader portfolio-management strategy, which emphasizes its branded products and differentiated offerings. By concentrating resources on areas with growth potential, Flexsteel aims to strengthen its market position and build more sustainable customer demand.

Customer orders increased 5% compared with the prior-year period, while ending backlog rose 8.2%. Management said these developments reinforced its confidence in the underlying strength of the business. Nevertheless, future results will depend on the conversion of orders into sales, consumer purchasing behavior, and the broader economic environment.

Profitability Affected by Currency and Inflation

Although revenue increased, Flexsteel faced substantial pressure on margins during the quarter. Gross margin declined to 22.0%, compared with 23.5% in the prior-year quarter, a decrease of 150 basis points.

The reduction was primarily attributable to two factors: unfavorable foreign currency translation associated with peso-denominated assets in Mexico and inflation driven by elevated energy prices. Foreign currency translation had a reported unfavorable impact of approximately 130 basis points on gross margin.

At the operating-income level, the company recorded a $0.8 million unfavorable foreign currency translation impact, equivalent to approximately 70 basis points of operating margin. Management said that excluding this effect, operating margin was in line with expectations for the quarter.

Operating income was $6.9 million, compared with $9.0 million a year earlier. The resulting operating margin of 6.0% was below the previous year’s 8.1%, reflecting the combined effects of lower gross margin and higher operating expenses.

Management also pointed to rising ocean transportation rates, which had nearly doubled over the preceding six months, alongside sharply higher fuel prices and increasing material costs. These factors have placed pressure on manufacturers’ supply chains and increased the importance of cost control.

Flexsteel said it has mitigated a meaningful portion of these headwinds through cost-saving initiatives, productivity improvements, and disciplined product portfolio management. The company intends to continue using these measures to manage expenses while investing in the products and capabilities needed to support future growth.

SG&A Spending Supports Long-Term Strategic Initiatives

Selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expenses represented 16.0% of net sales in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, compared with 15.4% in the same period last year.

The increase reflected investments in consumer insights, innovation, new products, marketing, demand generation, and talent. These expenditures are intended to strengthen Flexsteel’s capabilities and support its long-term growth strategy.

While higher SG&A expenses contributed to pressure on operating profitability, management views these investments as important to improving the company’s competitive position. A stronger understanding of consumer preferences can help guide product development, while marketing and demand-generation activities can support awareness and sales opportunities among retail partners and consumers.

The company’s strategy brings together consumer research, product innovation, and disciplined execution. Management believes these capabilities are increasingly working as an integrated system, allowing Flexsteel to translate customer needs into differentiated products and commercial opportunities.

The approach is designed to support continued market-share gains even when broader demand conditions remain difficult.

Net Income and Tax Expense

Flexsteel reported income tax expense of $1.5 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, representing an effective tax rate of 21.8%. In the prior-year quarter, income tax expense was $2.1 million, with an effective tax rate of 21.9%.

Net income for the latest quarter totaled $5.4 million, compared with $7.3 million in the same period a year earlier. Diluted earnings per share were $1.24, down from $1.31.

The decline in earnings occurred despite the increase in revenue, illustrating the impact of margin compression, currency effects, and operating expenses. Management’s response has focused on improving productivity, managing the product portfolio, and continuing investments intended to strengthen future sales performance.

Product Innovation Remains Central to Growth

Flexsteel continues to introduce products and programs designed to address changing consumer preferences and differentiate its furniture portfolio. Its recent Fall High Point Market introductions showcased several areas of development.

These included next-generation SixFlex™ seating technology and the Comfort Choice™ program, along with continued expansion of the company’s wellness portfolio across multiple consumer life stages.

Flexsteel also highlighted ongoing innovation in Flexsteel Pulse™, its immersive sound seating platform. The technology supports the company’s efforts to combine traditional furniture functionality with additional entertainment-oriented features.

New offerings in the Flexsteel Statements™ casegoods collection further broaden the company’s product portfolio. Together, these introductions demonstrate its focus on seating innovation, wellness-related products, immersive experiences, and casegoods.

Management believes that continued investment in product development and consumer insights can create compelling reasons for consumers and retailers to choose Flexsteel products. Strategic account share gains and expansion in health and wellness remain additional contributors to the company’s growth plans.

Liquidity and Capital Allocation

Flexsteel ended the first quarter of fiscal 2027 with a cash balance of $4.4 million and working capital of $80.5 million. The company also reported approximately $29.1 million in availability under its secured line of credit.

Capital expenditures totaled $1.0 million during the quarter, supporting the company’s ongoing operational and business requirements.

Flexsteel continued returning capital to shareholders, repurchasing $2.2 million of its shares and paying $1.1 million in dividends during the period.

Management cited the company’s balance sheet, disciplined operating model, and clear strategic priorities as important foundations for navigating economic uncertainty. These financial resources are expected to support the company’s efforts to balance operating needs, strategic investments, and shareholder returns.

Fiscal Q2 2027 Financial Outlook

For the second quarter of fiscal 2027, Flexsteel expects sales growth of 1% to 4% compared with the prior-year quarter. Excluding the impact of the Homestyles brand exit, the company expects sales growth of 3.5% to 6.5%.

Management anticipates an operating margin ranging from 6.5% to 7% for the second quarter. The outlook reflects the company’s expectations for continued growth while acknowledging ongoing pressures across the furniture industry.

The most significant sources of variability in the forecast are consumer demand and inflation in logistics and material costs driven by elevated energy prices. Changes in consumer confidence, affordability, geopolitical uncertainty, and tariff policies could also influence market conditions and operating expenses.

The projected sales ranges indicate that the Homestyles exit is expected to affect reported growth, while the underlying business excluding that category is expected to grow at a higher rate. Actual results may differ from these expectations as demand and costs evolve.

Flexsteel Focuses on Sustainable Long-Term Growth

Flexsteel’s first-quarter fiscal 2027 performance demonstrates continued revenue growth and demand for its branded furniture products, alongside the profitability challenges created by inflation and foreign currency movements.

The company enters the second quarter with higher customer orders, an increased ending backlog, continued investment in innovation, and available liquidity to support its operations. Its strategy centers on strengthening its core brand, developing differentiated products, expanding health and wellness offerings, and improving operating efficiency.

Although the external environment remains challenging, management believes these initiatives can help Flexsteel continue gaining market share and creating sustainable long-term shareholder value. The company’s ability to convert demand into sales while managing transportation, material, and operating costs will remain important to its financial performance in the coming quarters.
