Energy Day Festival 2026 to Bring Hands-On STEM Experiences to Houston Families
Houston’s largest free family festival focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is returning this fall, giving students, families and educators an opportunity to explore the role of science and energy through interactive activities and educational demonstrations.
The Energy Day Festival 2026 is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sam Houston Park in downtown Houston. The free community event will transform the park into an outdoor STEM learning environment where visitors can participate in experiments, explore energy concepts and interact with professionals working across the energy and technology sectors.
Hosted by the Consumer Energy Education Foundation (CEEF) in partnership with Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), the annual festival is designed to make STEM education accessible and engaging for young people and their families. Attendees will be able to meet energy industry experts, participate in hands-on activities and learn more about the science and technologies behind the energy systems used in everyday life.
Interactive STEM Activities for Students and Families
A major feature of Energy Day 2026 will be its collection of hands-on activities. Rather than relying solely on traditional classroom instruction, the festival gives students an opportunity to explore STEM concepts through practical demonstrations and experiments.
One of the featured activities will be the Future Me Career Quiz, which is designed to help students explore potential STEM career paths. Participants can discover careers that align with their interests and learn how their existing skills could connect with future opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The festival will also feature Pedal Power, an interactive activity that demonstrates how mechanical energy can be converted into electricity. Participants can ride a bicycle and observe how their physical effort can generate electrical power, providing a practical introduction to energy generation.
Another attraction, Hydration vs. Reaction, will allow participants to explore the relationship between hydration and reaction time. Through an interactive experiment, students can observe scientific principles while learning how everyday factors can influence physical responses.
Turning Everyday Items Into Science Experiments
Energy Day will also demonstrate how STEM concepts can be found in familiar household items.
The Potato Battery activity will allow participants to transform an ordinary potato into a basic power source. The demonstration introduces fundamental concepts associated with electricity and provides students with an accessible way to explore how chemical reactions can produce electrical energy.
The festival’s Slime Lab will offer another hands-on science experience. Participants will mix, stretch and experiment with slime while exploring chemistry concepts through a fun and highly interactive activity.
These demonstrations are intended to show students that STEM is not limited to laboratories, classrooms or specialized equipment. Instead, scientific concepts can be observed through everyday objects, physical activities and experiments.
By encouraging participants to experiment directly, Energy Day aims to make science more understandable and memorable for younger audiences.
Connecting STEM Education With Future Careers
The festival also places an emphasis on connecting educational experiences with potential career opportunities. Energy and STEM industries require professionals with expertise across numerous disciplines, including engineering, technology, mathematics, environmental sciences and other technical fields.
David Holt, President of Consumer Energy Alliance and a founding board member of the Consumer Energy Education Foundation, said Energy Day is designed to make science approachable while helping young people understand how STEM connects to the world around them.
“Energy Day is about making science fun, accessible, and real for students and their families,” Holt said.
He emphasized the value of giving young people opportunities to perform experiments and interact directly with STEM concepts. Activities such as generating electricity or conducting experiments can help students recognize the connection between classroom learning and real-world applications.
Holt added that the organizers want students attending Energy Day to leave with greater curiosity and interest in exploring what they can accomplish through STEM education.
The career-focused component of the festival is particularly important because exposure to STEM professions at an early age can help students understand the wide variety of educational and professional pathways available to them.
Energy Day Academic Program Extends STEM Education Year-Round
Energy Day is not limited to the annual festival. The event serves as the culminating celebration of the Consumer Energy Education Foundation’s year-round Energy Day Academic Program (EDAP).
Through EDAP, CEEF and its partners organize STEM and energy-focused competitions for schools across the Houston area. The program provides students with opportunities to engage with science and energy concepts throughout the year and apply their knowledge through educational challenges.
The program also provides a platform for recognizing students and educators who demonstrate achievement in STEM-related activities.
In 2026, $25,000 in awards will be distributed to participating students and educators. Award recipients will be recognized during the Energy Day Festival, connecting the year-round academic program with the broader community celebration.
The awards are intended to recognize the accomplishments of students and educators while highlighting the importance of STEM learning in Houston-area schools.
Bringing the Energy Industry Closer to the Community
Energy Day also provides an opportunity for members of the public to interact with professionals from the energy industry and related fields.
For students, these conversations can provide a practical perspective on the types of work carried out by scientists, engineers, technicians and other professionals. Meeting industry representatives can help young people understand how STEM subjects are applied beyond the classroom.
The festival’s focus on energy is particularly relevant to Houston, a major center for the energy sector and a community with extensive connections to energy production, infrastructure, technology and related industries.
By bringing energy professionals and STEM activities together in a public setting, the event creates an environment where students can ask questions, observe demonstrations and learn about technologies that influence everyday life.
The festival is also designed for families and educators, making it a community-wide learning experience rather than an event exclusively for students.
Supported by Industry Sponsors and Community Partners
Energy Day 2026 is supported by a broad group of companies and organizations. Sponsors and partners include the American Petroleum Institute, CenterPoint Energy, Chevron, Consumer Energy Alliance, Devon Energy, Sempra Infrastructure and Weatherford International, along with additional sponsors and community partners.
Support from businesses and community organizations helps make it possible for the festival to offer free admission while providing hands-on STEM activities and educational programming.
The participation of energy companies and other organizations also reinforces the connection between STEM education and the workforce. Industry involvement can help students better understand the skills and knowledge used in professional environments and the range of career opportunities available within technical fields.
Free Admission for the Houston Community
Energy Day Festival 2026 will be free and open to the public. The event will take place at Sam Houston Park in downtown Houston on Saturday, October 17, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The organizers are inviting students, families, educators and community members to attend and participate in the festival’s activities.
With interactive experiments, career exploration, industry demonstrations and educational competitions, the event is designed to provide visitors with multiple ways to engage with STEM subjects.
Information about the festival, sponsorship opportunities and volunteer opportunities is available through the Energy Day Festival website.
Building the Next Generation of STEM Talent
The Consumer Energy Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization focused on inspiring and preparing the next generation of energy and STEM leaders. Through hands-on educational programs, summer camps, STEM competitions and the Energy Day Festival, CEEF works to connect students and families with science, technology, engineering and mathematics while introducing potential future career opportunities.
The organization’s mission is centered on developing the future energy workforce by engaging students in STEM education and providing opportunities to learn through practical experiences.
Consumer Energy Alliance, meanwhile, advocates for affordable, reliable and cleaner energy solutions and represents families, farmers, small businesses, distributors, producers and manufacturers in the national energy discussion.
Together, CEEF and CEA are using Energy Day as a platform to connect education, community engagement and the energy sector.
As Houston prepares to welcome Energy Day Festival 2026, the event will offer students and families an opportunity to experience STEM through experimentation, demonstrations and direct interaction with professionals. From generating electricity with pedal power to building a potato battery and exploring chemistry through slime, the festival will demonstrate how science can be both educational and accessible.
By combining hands-on activities with career exploration and recognition of student achievements, Energy Day aims to encourage curiosity and continued interest in STEM education among Houston-area students. The October 17 event will provide a community setting where young people can explore scientific concepts, discover potential career pathways and see how STEM education connects to the technologies and energy systems that shape everyday life.
