New-Vehicle Appeal Sees Biggest Improvement Since 2018, JD Power Finds

JD Power 2026 APEAL Study Shows Rising Owner Satisfaction as Automakers Deliver Better Quality, Comfort and Driving Experience

New-vehicle owners in the United States are enjoying a more rewarding ownership experience than ever before, according to the JD Power 2026 U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study. The latest findings reveal that overall owner satisfaction has climbed for the third consecutive year, reflecting significant improvements in vehicle quality, comfort, design and day-to-day usability. As automakers continue refining both vehicle performance and ownership experience, customers are responding with greater enthusiasm and stronger emotional connections to their vehicles.

The study reports an overall satisfaction score of 858 out of 1,000, marking a seven-point increase over the previous year. This represents the largest year-over-year improvement since 2018 and ranks as the fifth-largest gain in the study’s three-decade history. The results demonstrate that manufacturers are making meaningful progress in creating vehicles that not only function reliably but also provide enjoyable and engaging ownership experiences.

Better Quality Leads to Higher Customer Satisfaction

The findings closely mirror results from the JD Power 2026 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS), which showed a decline in the number of problems experienced by new-vehicle owners. As quality issues decrease, satisfaction with vehicle design, performance and overall ownership experience continues to improve.

Together, the two studies emphasize that today’s customers expect more than dependable vehicles. Buyers are increasingly evaluating their ownership experience based on the complete package, including build quality, emotional appeal, dealership experience, after-sales service and everyday usability.

Frank Hanley, Senior Director of Auto Benchmarking at JD Power, explained that while automakers have successfully reduced defects and quality issues, true customer loyalty comes from delivering vehicles that combine reliability with thoughtful design.

He noted that customers appreciate interiors that are comfortable, practical and easy to use, featuring intuitive technology, convenient storage solutions and well-designed cabins. Brands capable of balancing dependable engineering with superior user experience are earning the highest levels of owner advocacy.

Interior Design Emerges as the Biggest Driver of Satisfaction

Among all vehicle attributes measured in the study, improvements to interior design generated the largest increase in customer satisfaction.

The interior category improved by 11 points, making it the strongest-performing area across the study.

Vehicle owners praised manufacturers for making cabins more functional and convenient through:

  • Better-designed cupholders
  • Improved smartphone storage locations
  • More practical center consoles
  • Increased storage flexibility
  • Better cabin organization

These seemingly small enhancements significantly improve everyday driving convenience, making owners feel their vehicles better accommodate modern lifestyles.

Exterior styling also saw strong gains, increasing by 10 points, while ease of entering and exiting vehicles improved by an equal margin. These findings suggest that buyers increasingly value practical features that simplify daily driving rather than focusing solely on appearance or performance.

Newly Introduced Models Lose Some Excitement

While automakers continue introducing new models packed with advanced technology and updated styling, the study indicates that fresh launches are not generating the excitement many buyers expect.

For the fifth consecutive year, newly introduced vehicles scored only two points higher than carryover models.

Performance differed between vehicle segments:

  • New premium models scored three points below comparable carryover vehicles.
  • New mass-market models exceeded carryover versions by 12 points.

The relatively small advantage for new vehicles suggests that customers often encounter frustrations during ownership, particularly involving technology.

The study highlights several factors reducing owner excitement:

  • Complex infotainment systems
  • Difficult vehicle setup procedures
  • Confusing digital interfaces
  • Technology features that require lengthy learning periods

These challenges appear to offset the appeal of introducing new features, particularly in premium vehicles where customer expectations remain exceptionally high.

Premium Brands Face Growing Competition

One of the study’s most notable trends is the narrowing gap between premium and mass-market brands.

Excluding Tesla, premium brands now lead mass-market manufacturers by only 29 points in emotional satisfaction.

This represents a dramatic reduction from the 66-point gap recorded in 2008, illustrating how mainstream manufacturers have significantly elevated vehicle quality and feature content.

Mass-market brands now offer many features once considered exclusive to luxury vehicles, including:

  • Advanced infotainment systems
  • Modern driver assistance technologies
  • High-quality exterior styling
  • Improved headlight performance
  • Better cabin refinement
  • Enhanced door-closing quality and sound

As a result, premium ownership is increasingly defined not simply by luxury branding but by overall execution, refinement and user experience.

Electric Vehicles Continue Building Stronger Customer Loyalty

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) recorded the largest increase in owner satisfaction among all powertrain types.

Although every propulsion technology posted improvements this year, BEVs experienced an impressive 22-point increase compared with the previous study.

Electric vehicles outperformed traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles across nearly every category measured.

The largest advantage appeared in powertrain satisfaction, where BEVs exceeded gasoline-powered vehicles by 109 points.

Owners cited smooth acceleration, quiet operation, responsive driving dynamics and overall performance as key contributors to higher satisfaction.

The results suggest that as charging infrastructure expands and vehicle technology matures, electric vehicle owners are becoming increasingly enthusiastic about their ownership experience.

Porsche Retains Premium Leadership

Among premium automotive brands, Porsche secured the highest overall APEAL score for the third consecutive year.

The German sports car manufacturer earned 896 points, making it the only premium brand to score above the segment average.

Porsche’s continued success reflects its ability to combine performance, craftsmanship, technology and driver engagement into a consistently rewarding ownership experience.

MINI Tops the Mass-Market Segment Again

In the mass-market category, MINI maintained its leadership position for a third straight year.

The brand achieved an impressive score of 875.

It was followed by:

  • Hyundai — 858
  • Kia — 857

The strong performances from Hyundai and Kia further demonstrate the rapid improvements made by mainstream automakers in vehicle quality, technology and customer satisfaction.

BMW Leads Manufacturer Awards

Stellantis

  • Ram 1500

Volkswagen Group

  • Porsche 911

Standout Individual Vehicle Performances

Among individual models, the BMW X6 and BMW 7 Series tied for the highest overall APEAL score in this year’s study.

Several vehicles also continued impressive winning streaks:

  • Kia K5 captured its sixth consecutive model-level award.
  • MINI Countryman earned its fourth straight segment award.
  • Ford Super Duty received its third consecutive recognition.
  • BMW X6, Ford Mustang, Hyundai Santa Cruz, Kia K4, Nissan Murano and Porsche 911 all repeated as segment winners for a second consecutive year.

These repeat victories demonstrate consistent customer satisfaction across multiple generations of these vehicles.

Measuring Emotional Connection with Vehicles

Now in its 31st year, the JD Power U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout Study remains one of the automotive industry’s leading benchmarks for measuring owner enthusiasm rather than simply vehicle reliability.

Unlike studies focused solely on quality or dependability, APEAL evaluates owners’ emotional attachment after approximately 90 days of ownership.

Participants assess 37 separate attributes, covering virtually every aspect of vehicle ownership.

The study measures experiences ranging from first impressions and driving excitement to seating comfort, technology usability, acceleration, cabin design and overall enjoyment behind the wheel.

This extensive dataset helps automakers understand which features most strongly influence customer loyalty and future purchasing decisions.

Study Methodology

The 2026 APEAL Study is based on responses from 78,514 owners of new 2026 model-year vehicles.

Participants completed surveys after owning their vehicles for approximately 90 days.

Data collection occurred between June 2025 and May 2026, covering vehicles registered from March 2025 through February 2026.

The comprehensive survey provides manufacturers with valuable insights into customer preferences and identifies opportunities for improving vehicle design, technology and overall ownership satisfaction.

Industry Outlook

The latest APEAL Study indicates that the automotive industry is entering a period where improvements in quality are increasingly complemented by better design, more intuitive technology and enhanced user experience. While reducing defects remains essential, manufacturers are discovering that long-term customer loyalty depends equally on creating vehicles that are comfortable, practical and emotionally engaging.

The narrowing gap between premium and mass-market brands demonstrates how rapidly mainstream manufacturers are elevating their products, while the continued rise in electric vehicle satisfaction signals growing consumer confidence in battery-powered transportation.

As competition intensifies, automakers that successfully combine dependable quality with intuitive technology, thoughtful interior design and enjoyable driving dynamics will likely continue strengthening customer satisfaction and brand loyalty in the years ahead.
