Aptiv Launches Industry-First Camera-Only Advanced Occupancy Classification System

A global industrial company, today announced the launch of its Advanced Occupancy Classification (AOC) system, the industry’s first occupant detection solution based entirely on an in-vehicle camera. The system simplifies vehicle architecture by eliminating traditional seat-integrated hardware while enabling next-generation cabin intelligence.

Building on more than two decades of Aptiv’s experience as a market leader in occupant detection, AOC is an advanced software solution that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision to accurately classify occupants based on parameters such as size, weight, and posture. This enables optimized airbag deployment decisions while significantly reducing system complexity and costs for automakers.

“Aptiv’s Advanced Occupancy Classification represents a strategic leap forward in in-vehicle innovation,” said Matthew Cole, Senior Vice President of Sensors and Computing at Aptiv. “By moving to an all-camera architecture, we are pioneering a new generation of intelligent, software-defined safety features enabled by a single sensor. AOC provides automakers with a smarter and more scalable foundation for the future of the in-vehicle driving experience, delivering the proven performance, safety, and reliability they expect from Aptiv.”

Unlike conventional, pressure-measurement-based occupant detection systems, AOC can work with most existing interior cameras in vehicles to accurately distinguish between adults, children, infants in car seats, and inanimate objects, while also recognizing posture, size, seating position, and orientation. This allows the airbag system to suppress deployment or individually adjust inflation force and timing to reduce the risk of injury—which is particularly important for children, smaller occupants, or passengers in awkward seating positions.

Advanced Occupancy Classification achieved 100% accuracy in all regulatory tests, including tests to assess how vehicles must protect occupants in frontal impacts according to the FMVSS 208 regulation, thus supporting compliance with global safety regulations and requirements.

A platform for intelligent cabin solutions at lower costs

By eliminating the airbag components in the seat, AOC significantly simplifies the system architecture. A single interior camera replaces multiple sensors and cables, reducing material costs by up to 40%, while simultaneously reducing assembly effort and improving scalability across different vehicle platforms.

The simplified architecture also offers car manufacturers more flexibility and allows for slimmer seat profiles as well as easier integration of comfort features such as heating, cooling and massage, without compromising safety.

OEMs can also use the same interior camera to provide more than 15 additional safety and comfort features, including seatbelt status monitoring, driver attention monitoring, gesture recognition, posture analysis, and detection of whether hands are on the steering wheel, as well as other functions.

Aptiv’s machine learning and logic fusion capabilities integrate data from multiple sensors, AI models, and critical vehicle data to ensure highly stable and robust occupant classification. Meanwhile, the over-the-air updateable system provides OEMs with a future-proof solution that adapts to evolving safety regulations. This reduces redesign costs, extends hardware lifespan, and allows for the introduction of new features over time without requiring additional sensors or increasing integration complexity.

The Advanced Occupancy Classification underlines Aptiv’s commitment to continuous innovation and helps customers bring safer, smarter and more cost-effective vehicles to market.

AOC will be showcased at a live vehicle demonstration at booth 20 of InCabin USA , which takes place from June 9-11, 2026, at Huntington Place in Detroit. In addition to AOC, other Aptiv features for driver and cabin monitoring, the Cockpit Sound Suite, the Android Automotive Framework, and much more will be presented at the show.
