Toshiba Expands Digital Isolator Portfolio with 10 New High-Temperature Industrial Devices
Toshiba Device & Storage Corporation has announced the addition of ten new products to its DCL54xx01A series of 4-channel high-speed standard digital isolators designed for industrial applications. The new devices are housed in SOIC16-W packages and support a maximum operating temperature of 125°C, addressing the growing demand for reliable high-temperature signal isolation in industrial systems. Mass production and shipments of the new series have officially begun.
As industrial systems continue to evolve, the use of advanced power semiconductor technologies such as silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) is becoming increasingly common. These technologies enable higher efficiency and improved performance in power conversion and motor control systems, but they also create operating environments with significantly higher temperatures and increased electrical noise. In such conditions, maintaining stable and reliable signal transmission between isolated circuits becomes a major challenge.
One of the key problems in isolated communication systems is the risk of malfunction caused by electrical noise occurring between input and output circuits. This issue is especially critical in industrial automation, motor control systems, inverters, and switching power supplies, where precise and uninterrupted communication is essential for safe and efficient operation. To address these concerns, Toshiba’s new digital isolators are engineered to deliver both high noise immunity and high reliability.
The newly introduced DCL54xx01A series supports a maximum operating temperature of 125°C, making it suitable for harsh industrial environments. The devices also feature Toshiba’s proprietary magnetically coupled isolated transmission technology. In this design, modulation and demodulation chips with insulating films are integrated into the same package, and signals are transmitted using magnetic fields. This architecture provides excellent resistance to electrical interference and significantly improves signal integrity.
A major highlight of the new series is its high common-mode transient immunity (CMTI) rating of 150kV/μs (typical). High CMTI performance is essential in industrial systems where rapid voltage changes can generate substantial electrical noise. By maintaining stable communication under such conditions, the new isolators help improve equipment reliability and reduce the risk of system failure.
The DCL54xx01A family also supports high-speed data communication with transmission rates of up to 150Mbps. In addition, the devices achieve low pulse width distortion of 0.8ns and propagation delay times of approximately 10.9ns, ensuring accurate and fast signal transfer in demanding applications.
To provide flexibility for system designers, Toshiba offers multiple channel configurations within the series. The lineup includes devices with four forward channels and zero reverse channels, three forward channels and one reverse channel, and two forward channels with two reverse channels. This range of configurations allows engineers to select the most suitable isolation solution for different communication architectures and control systems.
The ten newly introduced products include the DCL540C01A, DCL540D01A, DCL540L01A, DCL540H01A, DCL541A01A, DCL541B01A, DCL541L01A, DCL541H01A, DCL542L01A, and DCL542H01A. While all devices share core performance characteristics, they differ in output logic settings, channel direction arrangements, and enable control functions to accommodate various industrial requirements.
The DCL540 series devices feature four forward channels and no reverse channels, while the DCL541 series provides three forward channels and one reverse channel. The DCL542 series supports balanced bidirectional communication with two forward and two reverse channels. Certain models also include output enable or input disable control functions, allowing enhanced operational flexibility and safety management.
All products in the series are available in the SOIC16-W package format and support operating temperatures ranging from -40°C to 125°C. Storage temperatures range from -65°C to 150°C, ensuring durability during transportation and long-term storage. The devices also offer a minimum dielectric strength of 5000Vrms for one minute at 25°C, providing robust electrical isolation for industrial systems.
The recommended operating voltage range for both input and output power supplies is 2.25V to 5.5V, enabling compatibility with a wide range of industrial control platforms and communication interfaces.
The new digital isolators are targeted at several important industrial applications. These include industrial automation systems such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and I/O interfaces, motor control systems, industrial inverters, and switching power supplies. In all of these applications, maintaining reliable communication between electrically isolated circuits is critical for safety, efficiency, and performance.
In addition to the DCL54xx01A series, Toshiba is also mass-producing the DCL341x0B series, another family of standard digital isolators optimized for low power consumption and medium-speed communication up to 25Mbps. These devices are packaged in compact SSOP16 packages and provide customers with additional choices depending on their communication speed requirements and system constraints.
