Mitsubishi Electric Publishes Its First TNFD Report on Nature-Related Risks and Opportunities
Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (TOKYO: 6503) has released its first report aligned with the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), marking a significant step in the company’s sustainability and environmental transparency efforts.
The report outlines how Mitsubishi Electric group companies depend on natural capital, the impact of their business activities on the natural environment, and the potential risks and opportunities arising from nature-related factors. It also details the initiatives being implemented across the group to mitigate environmental impact. The disclosures follow the TNFD’s recommended framework, which is designed to help organizations assess and communicate their interactions with nature in a consistent and decision-useful manner.
Sustainability remains a central pillar of Mitsubishi Electric’s corporate strategy. The company is advancing comprehensive initiatives that cut across existing business segments and organizational boundaries, aiming to achieve what it calls “Trade-On”—the creation of mutual benefits that balance corporate growth with the well-being of society and the environment. Alongside its efforts to achieve carbon neutrality and promote circular economic models, Mitsubishi Electric is placing a strong emphasis on becoming a leader in nature-positive initiatives. These efforts are intended not only to protect biodiversity and ecosystems, but also to support the creation of new business opportunities and strengthen the company’s long-term business foundation.
In September 2024, Mitsubishi Electric and its group companies formally committed to disclosing nature-related issues in line with the TNFD recommendations and registered as a TNFD Adopter. The TNFD is a global initiative that provides guidance for companies and financial institutions to identify, assess, and disclose their dependencies on natural capital, their impacts on biodiversity, and the associated financial risks and opportunities.
Prepared in accordance with this commitment, Mitsubishi Electric’s inaugural TNFD report presents the key challenges the group faces and explains its approach to gaining a more accurate and systematic understanding of how its business activities interact with the natural environment. Through this disclosure, the company aims to enhance transparency for investors and other stakeholders while reinforcing its role in supporting a more sustainable and nature-positive economy.
