Mitsubishi Fuso and Foxconn Sign MOU to Collaborate on Zero-Emission Buses, Advancing Clean Mobility
Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation one of Japan’s most prominent commercial vehicle manufacturers, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Hon Hai Technology Group (“Foxconn”) (TWSE:2317), the world’s largest electronics manufacturer, to explore a wide-ranging strategic collaboration in the field of zero-emission buses (ZEVs).
The partnership marks a significant step forward for both companies as they seek to accelerate the transition toward sustainable transportation solutions, while also strengthening the FUSO bus brand globally.
Strategic Partnership for Next-Generation Buses
The collaboration will be carried out through the subsidiaries of both companies: Mitsubishi Fuso Bus Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (MFBM), a wholly owned subsidiary of MFTBC, and Foxtron Vehicle Technologies (TWSE:2258), Foxconn’s electric vehicle arm. Together, MFBM and Foxtron will work on joint initiatives across development, production, supply chain management, and sales of ZEV buses.
A major focus of this partnership will be the introduction of Foxtron’s award-winning electric buses, particularly the MODEL T and MODEL U, which will serve as the starting point for future projects. These models have already demonstrated commercial viability in public transportation systems in Taiwan, making them well-positioned to serve as a foundation for wider global deployment under the FUSO brand.
Strengthening the FUSO Bus Business
Through the MOU, the four companies will use this partnership as a launchpad to investigate innovative business models that can drive the development of new, made-in-Japan buses. The goal is not only to enhance FUSO’s current product lineup but also to position the company as a stronger competitor in the rapidly evolving bus market, which is increasingly shifting toward electric and zero-emission solutions.
MFBM will play a central role as the operations platform for these efforts. Its responsibilities will include overseeing development, production, and commercialization of buses across target markets. This scope covers both internal combustion engine (ICE) buses for specific market requirements and a new generation of zero-emission buses designed to meet global demand for clean and efficient public mobility.
By aligning Foxconn’s expertise in advanced manufacturing and electronics with MFTBC’s long history in vehicle engineering and global distribution, the partnership seeks to deliver buses that offer higher performance, safety, and sustainability.
Foxtron’s MODEL T and MODEL U: Proven Electric Solutions
Foxtron has already established itself as a strong player in electric vehicle innovation, and its bus lineup provides a compelling case for expansion under the FUSO brand.
- MODEL T: A full-size electric bus that has won awards for performance and safety, the MODEL T is currently deployed in the public transit systems of Taiwan’s largest cities. Its proven reliability and efficiency make it a natural candidate for integration into FUSO’s product line.
- MODEL U: A mid-size electric bus designed with a universal and intelligent architecture, the MODEL U emphasizes flexibility and multi-functionality. Its clean, minimalist design ensures it can be adapted for various urban and intercity applications, meeting diverse mobility needs.
Both buses represent a forward-looking approach to urban transportation and highlight Foxtron’s capacity to scale advanced EV solutions in international markets.
A Step Toward Sustainable Growth
The agreement reflects a shared vision between Mitsubishi Fuso and Foxconn to accelerate the transition toward zero-emission public transportation. By pooling resources and expertise, the companies aim to create a broader product portfolio that not only satisfies regulatory requirements but also meets the growing expectations of municipalities, operators, and passengers worldwide.
The global bus market is under increasing pressure to decarbonize as cities adopt stricter emissions standards and invest in clean mobility infrastructure. Partnerships such as this one will be vital to ensuring sustainable business growth while meeting the evolving demands of both developed and emerging markets.
