Eyes in the Sky: Interoperability Takes Center Stage at RIAT 2025

At the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) 2025, Lockheed Martin’s cutting-edge platforms and technologies are on full display—both in the skies and on the ground—demonstrating how advanced interoperability empowers seamless communication, coordination, and execution among aircraft, defense systems, and allied forces. As global threats evolve and grow more complex, this capability has never been more essential. By bridging platforms and nations through shared data, aligned systems, and integrated command and control (C2) capabilities, interoperability strengthens collective defense and bolsters international readiness.

Elevating Defense Through Innovation

Aligned with this year’s RIAT theme, “Eyes in the Sky,” Lockheed Martin continues to push the boundaries of integrated warfare. The F-35 Lightning II stands as a prime example of how modern fighter jets have become nodes in a connected battlespace. Equipped with advanced sensors, computing power, and real-time data-sharing capabilities, the F-35 doesn’t just fly missions—it enables decision dominance.

A clear illustration of this came with Project DEIMOS, a pioneering collaboration between Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works® division and the Royal Air Force (RAF). This project marked the first-ever classified data-sharing event between an F-35 and a non-U.S. command and control system during live flight operations. Building on that momentum, Danish F-35s operating in Texas successfully transmitted classified information to their homeland using an Open Systems Gateway via commercial satellite communications—another milestone in expanding secure information flow beyond national boundaries.

Moreover, the F-35 is designed to operate as a force multiplier. Its ability to communicate with naval assets, 4th-generation aircraft like the F-16, and ground-based systems ensures an extended range of operational awareness and mission efficiency. This type of cross-platform interoperability enables coalition forces to act in unison against threats, leveraging each asset’s unique strengths.

Dual-Use Technology: From Battlefield to Homeland

Many of the technologies showcased at RIAT demonstrate how innovations originally developed for military use are now providing benefits in the civilian sphere. SkyKeeper, Lockheed Martin’s advanced command and control system, is a case in point. Originally developed in the United Kingdom to support battlefield operations and currently deployed with the British Army under the Land Environment Air Picture Provision (LEAPP) program, SkyKeeper has also proven instrumental in civilian applications.

This system was utilized to enhance airspace security during high-profile international gatherings such as the G7 Summit and COP26 climate conference. Its dual-use capability reflects a broader trend in defense innovation—solutions designed for combat that can be repurposed to ensure public safety and crisis response on the home front.

Unmatched ISR Capabilities

A cornerstone of Lockheed Martin’s contribution to modern defense is its long-standing leadership in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR). Few platforms exemplify this better than the legendary U-2 Dragon Lady, which has maintained ISR dominance since its inception in 1955. Operating at altitudes of 70,000 feet, the U-2 provides unmatched endurance and flexibility, delivering real-time intelligence while remaining beyond the reach of most adversaries.

For decades, the U-2 has been a symbol of innovation and resilience, consistently evolving to meet new challenges. Even today, it continues to serve as a vital strategic asset. From its historic roots with Skunk Works to its continued operations from bases like RAF Cosford—the host of RIAT—the aircraft exemplifies the importance of sustained innovation and international partnerships.

Expanding on this ISR legacy is the TIQUILA program, another Skunk Works breakthrough and its first major international contract. This program introduces a family of Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) tailored for the British Army. TIQUILA achieved Initial Operating Capability (IOC) in March 2025, offering scalable and agile ISR support with two sizes of UAS tailored for tactical and strategic missions. This achievement further demonstrates Lockheed Martin’s commitment to advancing allied capabilities across multiple domains.

Harnessing the Power of Data

Interoperability is not solely about the integration of hardware and software—it is fundamentally about data and decision-making. The most powerful advantage comes from the ability to gather, analyze, and share data across platforms and partners in real-time. In today’s rapidly shifting threat landscape, access to accurate, timely information is critical. Data-driven operations allow defense forces to act preemptively, reduce ambiguity, and respond with speed and precision.

Lockheed Martin’s systems are engineered with this philosophy in mind. Whether it’s real-time ISR feed from a UAS, shared radar tracks through command centers, or threat detection across coalition airspace, the emphasis remains on transforming raw data into actionable intelligence.

Through innovation in stealth, connectivity, ISR, and command and control, Lockheed Martin is enabling a more connected, more informed, and more agile force structure.
